Seeking Stillness: Stewart’s Reflection on Festival Season in Edinburgh

The Edinburgh Festivals bring colour, culture and celebration to the city but for some residents, the intensity of the season can feel like too much. In this piece, we hear from Stewart, who shares his personal reflections on how the festival has changed over the years, the challenges it brings to his wellbeing, and the simple things that help him find balance amidst the noise.
What does the festival season mean to you?
The festival season evokes a lot of happy memories from the past. Nowadays, I do look forward to catching one or two shows, but with each passing year I find myself avoiding the city centre and the Southside for most of the festival. The festival seems to have become too frenetic and too busy. It used to be, in my mind, that the first week of the festival was less busy and more relaxed. But now it’s full throttle from the start. And Edinburgh is always busy with tourists as it is.
How does the festival impact your mental health and wellbeing?
I avoid certain areas as the sheer amount of people and noise can be overwhelming at times, especially getting to and from work.
What do you do before, during, and after the festival that helps?
I like to walk regularly, in nature whenever possible. This helps me a lot, keeps me grounded – and quite a contrast to the busy festival.
What keeps you well and helps you to thrive?
I wouldn’t say that I’m thriving at the moment, but walking, reading and enjoying downtime at home helps. Having a good balance when it comes to social connection is important too, spending time with family and friends.
