“We want to give back to our local community – and change the world”

We recently caught up with Monty from Leith Walk Polisbox to hear more about the organisation, the range of community-focused work happening there, and what continues to inspire her day to day.

From supporting local people to try out new business ideas, to hosting free events and shared community projects, Monty shares how the Polisbox has grown into a welcoming space at the heart of Leith Walk where creativity, connection and practical support come together.

Supporting local entrepreneurs

A lot of our entrepreneurs are local residents who are inspired to try running their own business, so I like to think we are helping their dreams come true.

Community space and events

We also have a little library, a wee garden and host regular events that our community can participate in for free.

Some of the free events we run include Fake Fringe, a free live performance event. This year it will take place on 22 August 2026 and will feature a ska band and a choir.

We also hold a monthly community meal on the last Monday of the month. The food is donated by local businesses Twelve Triangles and Weigh 2 Go, with hot food provided by Cyrenians Kitchen. Volunteers run the stall and spend time chatting with guests, helping to create a welcoming space and encourage social connection.

Key projects

Another project we are involved in is Grow2Eat, in collaboration with Settlement Projects and supported by Edinburgh Communities Climate Action Network (ECCAN). The project aims to get people growing food, even if they do not have access to a garden. We give away seeds, offer compost delivery by cargo bike and share advice. We have even organised foraging walks.

During Real Bread Week and Sourdough September, we host stalls at the Polisbox offering advice and sourdough starter kits made with Scotland The Bread flour.

A different kind of business

We are a business, but it is not business as usual at the box. We want to give back to our local community and change the world.

Looking after mental health

To look after my own mental health, I try to find three things every day that I am grateful for. The world news can feel very depressing sometimes. I also like gardening. It is the good, the bad and the ugly, especially when the slugs have eaten all my seedlings.
