Finding Calm in the Chaos: Jamie’s Edinburgh Festival Survival Story

Black and white busy crowd

For many, the Edinburgh Festivals are an exciting and inspiring time of year, full of creativity, culture and connection. But for those living in the city, the hustle and bustle can feel overwhelming. In this post, we hear from Jamie, a local resident, about how he navigates the highs and lows of festival season. From planning ahead to creating space for calm, Jamie shares honest reflections on what helps him manage stress and stay well.

Festival season means avoiding Edinburgh as much as possible and if I have to go up there try to be up and back early to avoid the hustle and bustle.

Although the idea of the festival is fantastic as people come together from all over the world and can be who they are in Edinburgh without fear of judgement, sometimes the sheer volume of people creates havoc even for just travelling A-B. When I do attend any shows, I like it as it allows me to socialise with friends & family, have fun and do something different but the biggest thing it causes is stress and anxiety. So, the negatives sometimes outweigh the positives.

Before the festival I might look at shows at earlier times or mid-week as they may be quieter along with arrange things to be away from the centre of time. During the festival plan journeys in detail and ensure I leave plenty of time to allow for the busy streets. Now that I drive it takes a lot of pressure off using public transport in such a busy time. After the festival breathe a sigh of relief it’s over and resume going back into Edinburgh for meetings, catch ups and social outings. Normal order and queuing starts again at bus stops rather than being a free for all.

Headphones are a must as it helps distract and focus. Planning things ahead of time as to not be caught out or be late to things.
