A chat with HCL

HcL has been supporting communities across Edinburgh, East, West and Midlothian for over 40 years, since it was first established in November 1982.
Through services like Dial-A-Ride and Dial-A-Bus, HcL helps people get to essential appointments, do their shopping, visit friends or simply enjoy a change of scenery. But it is more than just transport. It is a lifeline.
Read on to learn more about the incredible work HcL does and the impact it has on the people they support.
If you have a story you’d like to share, we’d love to hear from you. Email us at ithrive@health-in-mind.org.uk.
“Our services enable people to get out of their homes, meet others and feel part of their community,” says Elizabeth Campbell, Service Development Manager at HcL. “On Dial-A-Bus, we have seen real friendships form. People who wouldn’t have known each other otherwise now look out for one another and even keep in touch outside the service.”
Supporting Connection and Combating Isolation
The impact of services like these is recognised nationally. The Scottish Government’s Strategy for Tackling Social Isolation and Loneliness highlights accessible transport as a key way to build social connections, especially for people in later life or in rural areas. HcL’s work is a direct response to this, offering transport that is safe, supported and designed with the passenger in mind.
All of HcL’s transport is door-through-door, with drivers offering help from a person’s front door, onto the vehicle, and all the way to their destination. Whether it’s a trip to the doctor, a wellbeing group or the supermarket, each journey is made easier, safer and more comfortable.
“This service is a lifeline to me as it enables me to get out and about without worry. The drivers are fantastic and patient. I can’t praise the service enough.”
“I’ve made new friends since joining Dial-A-Bus. It’s lovely. I look forward to seeing them. It stops loneliness and makes life easier for me.”

Why We Do What We Do
At HcL, we are passionate about making transport accessible. Not just to get people from A to B, but to prevent isolation, improve wellbeing and support independence.
In partnership with local organisations, our goal is to make everyday life more connected and to ensure that everyone, no matter their age or mobility, can remain active and involved in their community.
Last year alone, we helped over 100,000 people across the Lothians stay connected.
Looking After My Own Wellbeing
By Elizabeth Campbell, Service Development Manager at HcL Transport
“I am a big believer in the power of creativity to support mental health. I go to a local art class every Friday morning. It is so relaxing to be able to switch off and focus on painting or drawing for a few hours. I also enjoy visiting galleries and exhibitions. I find them fascinating and calming.
These activities help me take care of my own wellbeing, and my art class is a great way to connect with others in my community. It is my reminder that small, creative moments can have a big impact.”
