Availability : Edinburgh Wide

Who is this for?

  • Children and adults affected by mental health and wellbeing difficulties
  • Adults who have an existing diagnosis of Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD) (MBT Programme only)

Description

Arts Psychotherapies are person-centred psychological therapies that are based in NHS Lothian in Community, Inpatient and Children and Young People Services.

The Art Psychotherapies team aims to work with people who don’t find words accessible or helpful when describing or understanding intense emotional experiences. This could be due to your processing capacity being impacted but often it is due to complex trauma or a period of acute mental health difficulties.

In Edinburgh Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) we run a Mentalization Based Arts Psychotherapy Treatment (MBT) Programme. It provides people who attract a diagnosis of Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD) with a programme aimed at reducing symptom severity and improving relational functioning. This programme involves access to a ten-week Psychoeducation group followed by a twelve-month MBT Arts Psychotherapies Group including three individual assessment sessions. Patients are prioritised from within existing CMHT patient caseloads, and so please speak with your existing Edinburgh CMHT contact (CPN, Psychologist, etc) for further information.

How do I access this?

  • Referral by third party

If you are interested in accessing arts psychotherapies, speak with your General Practitioner about your wellbeing and mental health. If they agree with you that a referral to your local Community Mental Health Team is appropriate then they will do this for you, and at that stage you could ask about Arts Psychotherapies.

At present we cannot take self-referrals from members of the public for Arts Psychotherapies treatments. We can only take referrals for people who are already connected with other services in NHS Lothian. We are a small service and we are trying to make sure that we are targeting our services at those in most need.
