Who is this for?
Adults affected by former forced adoption policies
Description
Experiences with historical adoption are sensitive and can be upsetting. For some, who may have experienced trauma, the impacts can be long-term.
Health in Mind provides a dedicated helpline in collaboration with The Scottish Government.
Their staff have knowledge and understanding about trauma and its impacts, including mental wellbeing.
To provide support to those affected, new peer support groups are being established for adult adoptees, for mothers, for fathers and for other family members affected by these historic adoption practices.
Peer support connects you with other people who have had similar experiences. If you’re one of the thousands of people impacted by historic adoption you may have experienced some of the following: feelings of unresolved grief, loss and trauma, struggles with identity, and fear of rejection. Some may experience difficulties with relationships or with their mental health. While there are commonalities, each person’s experience is unique.
In a confidential peer support space, you can share personal experiences, listen to and accept other’s stories, and provide empathy and understanding. It’s also a space to share encouraging stories of how people have moved forward and what helps keeps them motivated and well. Meetings can be held in person or online. Groups will be facilitated by a person with lived experience of historic adoption, and who has completed training.
