Description

The Community Wellbeing Collective (CWC) is an art and social collective of 30+ people living in and connected to Wester Hailes. It is a diverse, intergenerational, intercultural, working-class community-led and run organisation – imagining, practising and creating space for collective wellbeing towards change.

All the activities we provide are free and delivered by our members and partner organisations and practitioners, with the majority of our funding coming from The Robertson Trust and The National Lottery Community Fund, as well as fund raising with the local community to pay for our space, utilities, work costs etc.

CWC was originally initiated by social practice artists Jeanne van Heeswijk and Bobby Sayers through a commission by Edinburgh Art Festival in partnership with WHALE Arts. They brought people together to discover shared urgencies and grow skills, forming a group where people can be themselves, use their talents, sparking personal, community and structural transformation.

Together we run our own space (now opposite the ODEON) in Wester Hailes, by and for the people, offering over 350+ free wellbeing and creative arts activities per year with over 7000+ visitors per year, including 12 major monthly ‘Anchor Events’ where we collaborate closely with artists and relevant organisations around subjects that are barriers to better wellbeing and act towards local change such as housing, racism, social care, addiction, cost of living crisis and others issues.

The Space continues to be a living art-work brought to life each time a human comes to rest, connects and plays within it. Local members host the space and deliver political events and wellbeing activities which try to suspend the suffocation of suffering, creating space to breathe and the possibility to dream together.
