Collective Advocacy for people from ethnic minority backgrounds (CAPS Independent Advocacy)

Availability : Edinburgh Wide

Who is this for?

  • Adults aged 18 years old and over, who are from an ethnic minority background and who have struggled with their mental health at some point in their life

Description

This group is for people from ethnic minority backgrounds who have lived experience of mental health difficulties (no formal diagnosis needed). It is run by a Collective Advocacy worker (Mohasin Ahmed) who facilitates group discussions and activities, but the actions and agendas of the group are participant-led.

People from ethnic minority backgrounds have their own unique experiences in the mental health system and have additional barriers and needs when it comes to accessing services and gaining support for their mental health. These groups can experience racism and discrimination which contributes to poor mental health. They may also feel misunderstood by professionals due to religious or cultural differences, and there may also be a stigma within these communities which makes it harder to access support.

Therefore, collective advocacy is a safe space for these groups to come together to talk about their experiences and to support each other to raise their voice about issues that affect them.

Collective Advocacy aims to make people aware of their rights, to use personal experience to make positive changes within services and to raise awareness. It also reduces feelings of isolation when raising a difficult issue and provides a community of like-minded people.
