Gender-based violence (GBV) means any harmful behaviour directed at someone because of their gender. This can include domestic abuse, sexual violence, stalking, forced marriage and other forms of control or harm.
Most often, GBV is carried out by men against women and girls. It comes from unfair power differences in society and can seriously affect people, families, and communities.
Anyone can experience GBV, regardless of their age, background or identity. It can be physical, emotional, sexual or financial, and can happen within relationships, families or communities.
