World Suicide Prevention Day 2026: Changing the Narrative
07 August 2026

10 September marks World Suicide Prevention Day, a global awareness day that brings together communities, organisations and individuals to help create a world where fewer people die by suicide.
The theme for 2024–2026, Changing the Narrative, encourages us to challenge stigma, encourage open conversations, and create a culture where people feel able to ask for help and support one another.
Talking about suicide can feel difficult, but compassionate, honest conversations can make a real difference. By learning more about suicide prevention and knowing where support is available, we can all play a part in helping people feel less alone.
If you’re worried about yourself or someone else
If you’re struggling to cope, experiencing suicidal thoughts, or you’re worried that someone you care about may be at risk, support is available.
Visit our Are you thinking about suicide? page for information about recognising the signs, accessing support, and what to do in a crisis.
You can also visit Suicide Prevention Scotland for national information, advice and resources:

Listen to the Suicide Prevention Scotland podcast
The Suicide Prevention Scotland Podcast explores lived experiences, expert insights and practical conversations about suicide prevention, hope and recovery. Listening to the experiences of others can help challenge stigma and encourage more open conversations about mental health.
Looking after your mental health
Whether you’re supporting someone else or looking after your own wellbeing, having conversations about mental health can help people feel heard and understood.
Our How to talk about mental health resource offers practical guidance on starting conversations, listening without judgement, and supporting someone who may be finding things difficult.
Remember, you don’t have to face things alone. Help is available, and reaching out is a sign of strength.
