Help with heating oil costs – support available

Households struggling with the rising cost of heating oil will soon be able to access financial support through their local council, following a new £50 million funding package announced by the UK Government.

The move comes in response to sharp price increases linked to ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which have placed additional pressure on households that rely on heating oil for warmth and hot water.

The funding is aimed at helping vulnerable households maintain access to essential heating. Local councils will distribute the support, with the expectation that funds will be used to help residents top up their heating oil and avoid going without.

How to apply

The scheme opens on 1 April 2026, and households are encouraged to apply directly through their local council rather than waiting to be contacted.

Each council will:

  • Set its own eligibility criteria
  • Decide how much financial support households can receive
  • Provide a dedicated webpage with application details

Successful applicants are expected to receive funding within 48 hours.

For those in urgent need, support may already be available, so it’s recommended to contact your local council as soon as possible.
